Unit 7 discusses the great empires that arose to unify the Near East from the 10th century BCE until the arrival of Alexander in the 4th century BCE. The unit begins with the rise of the Assyrian empire and the organization of its government, and then describes how Babylonia reasserted its power and the role of religion during its short revival. Finally, the unit describes the rise and fall of the Persian empire and the legacy of the Mesopotamians.
